History

Dr.
Feldenkrais, a physicist and athlete, worked in Marie Curie's
laboratory in Paris in the 1920’s, where he also imbued
himself in studies of psychology. In parallel with his scientific
career, he practiced martial arts, a rare sport at the time, which
he taught to the British Armed Forces.
Combining his knowledge of the sciences, psychology, physiology of
movement and human development, he began helping people who were
suffering from various injuries and psychological trauma, as well
as individuals striving to maintain a state of excellence, such as
performers and athletics. His approach was through movements
designed to include the entire human system: neurological,
skeletal, muscular, and cognitive. The method connects movement
with specifically directed attention and awareness, a revolutionary
concept at the time and still an innovative and exciting frontier
in modern scientific studies today. The method has a proven
successful worldwide track record in overcoming physical and mental
difficulties as well as enhancing performance
excellence.
Mia Segal, standard
bearer of the Feldenrkrais work, studied and worked with Dr. Moshe
Feldenkrais starting in 1957 and. for fifteen years. was his only
collaborator, before they began training others worldwide together.
He shared with her his thoughts, ideas and practice while he was
developing his unique method. She was, as he wrote "... my best
collaborator and the only one who will go beyond me". As a child in
this household, Leora Gaster was naturally integrated into this
profound knowledge and expertise. This body of work, available only
to them for so many years, they continue to develop, distill and
define, ensuring the highest standards in teaching of the
Feldenkrais Method.
